Zhou Chengyun was on the verge of tears, his brown eyes glistening.
He remembered what Shuai Chang had said about not moving around too much, so he dared not shift in his seat during the ride, even though he felt sticky with sugar. He didn’t want to disturb the driving Shuai Chang.
“Chengyun, why didn’t you tell Daddy?” Shuai Chang hurried into the car to grab tissues for Zhou Chengyun. Unfortunately, the sticky syrup had already seeped into his clothes, and wiping it would not help.
Zhou Chengyun blinked his eyes, and two tears rolled down his cheeks. “Daddy, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault.”
Shuai Chang quickly kissed Zhou Chengyun’s cheek to comfort him. “Daddy isn’t angry with Chengyun. Daddy knows it’s because you were being good that this happened. It’s my fault; don’t cry.”
Zhou Chengyun snuffled silently, tears dripping down continuously.
Shuai Chang took a bottle of water from the trunk and helped Zhou Chengyun wash the sticky syrup off his little hands. Zhou Chengyun was still silently shedding tears. “Chengyun, look, Daddy has cleaned you up. Let’s go to the mall and buy you a new outfit. We can clean this one at home.”
Upon hearing this, Zhou Chengyun raised his head, his eyes red and his white nose twitching. “Really? I’m afraid Grandma will scold me.”
“If Grandma scolds anyone, it’ll be Daddy, not Chengyun. Daddy will tell Grandma how good Chengyun was today, and Grandma will definitely give Chengyun a reward. Later, if Daddy gets scolded, can Chengyun come and comfort Daddy?”
Zhou Chengyun nodded. “Chengyun will tell Grandma that Daddy was very good, so don’t scold him.”
“You’re truly Daddy’s little treasure. Come on, Daddy will take Chengyun to buy new clothes.” Shuai Chang picked up Zhou Chengyun in his arms this time, and Zhou Chengyun didn’t panic; instead, he giggled.
Fortunately, right next to the car mall was a large shopping center. Shuai Chang took Zhou Chengyun to the second floor to buy a new outfit, while the sticky clothes were put in a bag by the sales assistant.
Zhou Chengyun held the bag himself, and Shuai Chang praised him, “Is Chengyun a little prince? So handsome!”
Zhou Chengyun smiled shyly and reached out to pull on Shuai Chang’s sleeve. “Daddy, let’s go.”
After buying a child’s car seat, Shuai Chang glanced at the time; it was already six o’clock. Worried that Wei Yanze would be anxious, Shuai Chang took out his phone for a video call.
When the call connected, Wei Yanze’s face appeared on the screen, his brow slightly furrowed. “Zhen Ting, did you pick up Chengyun? Why aren’t you back yet?”
Hearing Wei Yanze’s voice, Zhou Chengyun immediately shouted, “Daddy! Chengyun is here!”
The worry on Wei Yanze’s face was instantly replaced with tenderness as Shuai Chang turned the camera to show Zhou Chengyun sitting in the back seat in a child’s car seat. Wei Yanze noticed immediately and asked, “Did Chengyun wear new clothes?”
Zhou Chengyun nodded happily. “Mm! New clothes!”
Then he sneakily glanced at Shuai Chang and whispered, “Daddy bought it for Chengyun.” After saying that, he covered his mouth with both hands, laughing like a little cat that had just stolen food.
Wei Yanze also smiled, pretending to be envious. “Chengyun went to the mall alone with Daddy, huh? Daddy wants to go too!”
“When Daddy has a little brother, Daddy will take me and the little brother together,” Zhou Chengyun replied, looking up at Shuai Chang in the driver’s seat.
Shuai Chang nodded with a smile. “Yes, we’ll all go as a family together.”
Hearing Daddy agree, Zhou Chengyun’s smile grew wider.
Wei Yanze said, “Chengyun, hurry and come see Daddy, okay?”
Shuai Chang handed the phone to Zhou Chengyun so he could talk to Wei Yanze while he drove towards the hospital.
Zhou Chengyun nodded. “Daddy, we’ll be there soon. Daddy drives so fast; we’ll get there in a flash!”
Wei Yanze replied, “Wow, is Chengyun’s daddy that amazing?”
Zhou Chengyun proudly said, “My daddy is definitely amazing; he’s better than everyone else’s daddy.”
Hearing this, Shuai Chang couldn’t help but grin like a silly dad.
Children truly are the cutest creatures in the world, Shuai Chang thought.
Zhou Chengyun chatted with Wei Yanze all the way, praising his daddy in almost every other sentence, extolling him as the best in the world.
“Chengyun, we’ve arrived. Say goodbye to Daddy, and we’ll see you shortly.” Shuai Chang parked the car and got out to lift Zhou Chengyun from the back seat.
Zhou Chengyun tightly gripped the phone with both hands and puckered his rosy lips, giving Wei Yanze’s face on the screen a quick kiss. “Daddy, Chengyun is coming to find you soon, bye~”
Wei Yanze replied, “Chengyun, bye~”
Shuai Chang leaned into the camera, saying, “Bye, dear~”
Wei Yanze’s face flushed, “…Hubby, bye~”
After hanging up the video call, Shuai Chang bent down to open his arms for Zhou Chengyun. Zhou Chengyun laughed, emitting a dolphin-like sound as he leaped into Shuai Chang’s embrace. Shuai Chang’s strong arms caught him securely, gently bouncing him in his arms. “Let’s go find Daddy.”
Zhou Chengyun snuggled softly against him, rubbing his face affectionately against Shuai Chang’s neck.
As they entered the inpatient department, Zhou Chengyun saw nurses in white uniforms coming and going and shrank back a little. “Daddy, why do we have to go to the hospital to find Daddy? Aren’t we going home?”
When Zhou Chengyun was younger, his health had not been great, and he spent most of his time in the hospital rather than at home. To him, the hospital represented taking bitter medicine and painful injections.
Shuai Chang ruffled his little head. “Daddy is not feeling well and needs to stay in the hospital for a few days. When we see Daddy, Chengyun should show care for him; that way, Daddy will get better faster.”
“I understand, Daddy.”
Arriving at the door of the ward, Shuai Chang set down Zhou Chengyun, turned the doorknob, and opened the door. He thought Zhou Chengyun would rush in to find Daddy, but instead, he turned back to look at him and grabbed his hand.
Shuai Chang smiled gently. “Let’s go in together.”
The two handsome ones, one big and one small, held hands and walked into the ward. Deng Jie, picking up on the mood, said, “I’ll go get some hot water outside,” leaving space for the family of three.
Zhou Chengyun led Shuai Chang’s hand to the bedside, his eyes filled with concern. “Daddy, are you feeling any better? Chengyun was so worried about you.”
Wei Yanze stroked Zhou Chengyun’s soft hair. “Daddy is very happy to see Chengyun. When Daddy is happy, the illness will get better quickly.”
